Keeping Your Skin Picture Perfect in Winter

Winter Skin Care Tips

The Colorado climate is rarely forgiving to skin, but that’s never truer than at the height of winter. Keeping your skin in good shape this time of year can seem nearly impossible, but with a little bit of info and some key winter skin care tips, you can keep that silky smooth skin you love in the summertime all year round. These tips will help keep your skin picture perfect and ready for our hot shots photo contest, family photography or senior pictures.

Get Your Moisture Facts Straight

A lot of people think that the reason skin gets dry in the winter is because of the cold, but in reality, it’s the drying heat from your home that causes the increased dryness. There are a million tips out there on the internet about combating the dryness, but one to be wary of is places that tout a thicker moisturizer being the key to healthy skin in the winter. A lighter moisturizer may work just as well, it really comes down to the ingredients. Knowing your skin type and what kinds of formulas work well for you could save you from buying up loads of thick lotions that do little more to help your skin’s health than the moisturizer you know and love.

Kiss Those Hot Baths Goodbye

The heat in your home dries out your skin, but unfortunately, so does spending a lot of time in hot water. We know, we know, it sucks to be told you can’t have that hot shower at the end of a long day, or soak in a hot tub for a couple of hours to unwind, but if you’re having issues with dry skin, hot showers and baths are only going to make things worse. Stick with warm water and shorter showers, and always moisturize right away to keep all that moisture in your skin rather than letting it dry you out.

Because the heater in your home tends to dry it out in the winter, having a humidifier or two throughout the house can help you keep some much-needed moisture in your house. At the very least, have a humidifier in your bedroom to use at night so you sleep better and avoid waking up with an eternally scratchy throat

This isn’t the quick-fix kind of tip, but it is an important one. Of course, living at altitude, you know it’s important to stay hydrated, but it’s even more important in the winter. While chugging extra water won’t get rid of those dry patches on your arms, it will help keep your body, in general, more hydrated, which long-term is excellent for your skin (and hair!). So keep a water bottle close at hand all winter long and don’t be surprised if the number of days you wake up with chapped lips starts to dwindle.

Keeping your skin in good condition even through the toughest winter conditions is really all about having a solid regimen in place to care for your body inside and out no matter what time of year it is. And once you’ve achieved that glow you’re working toward, don’t forget to snap a few photos along the way. Or you could always come in for a session and let us capture that perfect glow for you!
